Ingredients

  • 2 cans Garbanzo beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 Onion (finely chopped)
  • 8 cloves Garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1 Bell pepper (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne pepper
  • 4 leaves Bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin powder
  • 1 (4 oz.) can Tomato Paste
  • 4 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1-2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 - 2 tablespoon Lemon Juice (fresh)

Optional

  • 1 teaspoon Chaat masala or Garam Masala
  • 1 inch piece Ginger (fresh) (peeled, finely chopped)

Note

Serving Suggestions:
1) Serve with Naan, Wheat Tortillas or Toast.
2) Serve with steamed/cooked Long grain or Basmati rice.
Options:
1) You can reduce or increase salt, tomato paste, cayenne and oil as you wish.
2) Reduce water if you want this dish to be dry and thick.

Directions

Step 1
Add oil to a fry pan. Place on medium heat.
Step 2
Add chopped onion, bell pepper, garlic and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir fry and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the onion is cooked. Don't burn it.
Step 3
Add turmeric, coriander, cumin, chaat masala powder or garam masala, cayenne, ginger, bay leaves and stir fry the mixture for 1 minute.
Step 4
Add half the tomato paste and 1/2 cup of water to the mixture in the pan. Mix well. Cook for 2 more minutes.
The gravy produced by the tomato paste, water and the spices must keep the Channa Masala moist, but not runny.
Step 5
Add the lemon juice and mix thoroughly.
Step 6
Serve hot.
