Ingredients

  • 1 cup White Long Grain Rice
  • 6 cups Water

Instructions

PROCEDURE 1 (Using a Pressure Cooker)

  1. Place 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker that can be used on the stove.
  2. Place the pressure cooker on High Heat.
  3. Place the perforated plate that comes with the pressure cooker or a 1/2 to 1 inch high metal ring, inside the pressure cooker at the bottom.
  4. Add rice to a stainless steel bowl and place the bowl inside the pressure cooker over the plate or ring. Add 2 cups of water to the bowl with the rice.
  5. Close the pressure cooker and set it to cook.

  6. After about 5 to 10 minutes, the steam pressure will start to build up.

  7. When the pressure rises and the steam noise is loud, let it be that way for a minute. Do not overcook. Then turn off the stove.

  8. Let the rice stay for 15 minutes or until the steam dies down completely and it is safe to open the pressure cooker.

  9. When it is safe to open, carefully open the pressure cooker.

  10. The rice should look cooked and fluffy.

PROCEDURE 2 (Using a pan)

  1. Have 3 cups of water in a metal or non-stick pan and place it on Medium Heat.
  2. When the water comes to a boil, add the rice to the pan.
  3. Cover the pan and cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Stir the rice, and cook for 5 more minutes. Check if the rice is cooked. If not, cook for 2 minutes at a time, until the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked. If the rice is cooked, but there is more unabsorbed water, you can drain the rice in a colander.
  5. The rice should look cooked and fluffy.

Recipe Notes

Options:

  1. You can add a tsp of cooking oil to the rice in either procedure.  This will keep the rice from becoming mushy.
  2. If the rice is not cooked when you open the pressure cooker, you can turn it on again and cook a little more. Make sure that there is at least 1/2 inch water at the bottom.
